He also helped lead major lawsuits against various entities and individuals, including the tobacco industry, Microsoft, the Tomasso Group, Countrywide Financial, Computer Plus Center of East Hartford, and Robin Barnes, the president and treasurer of the Village Academy charter school in New Haven. After US Senator Chris Dodd announced his retirement from the Senate in early 2010, Blumenthal announced he would run for Dodd's seat. Political Career

In 1999, he was forced out from Goldman Sachs. He then announced he would be campaigning for a New Jersey Senate seat and won the nomination and then the election over his Republican opponent, Bob Franks. He was sworn into the Senate in January of 2001. His campaign was the most expensive in U.S. history in terms of Senate campaigns. During his tenure in the Senate, he co-authored the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. He was also a sponsor of the Start Healthy, Stay Healthy Act, supported gun control laws, was the chief sponsor of the Darfur Accountability Act, and coauthored a tax-cut proposal that lowered the marginal tax bracket for the lowest of income earners. Corzine then decided to run for the New Jersey Governor position in 2005. His opponent was Republican Doug Forrester. Corzine won the race with 54% of the vote and took office in January of 2006. While governor, Corzine focused on balancing the budget and attempted to address the crisis of municipal funding. Corzine was one of several United States Governors who were early supporters of Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign. He raised over $1 million for her campaign but then became a prominent spokesperson for Barack Obama once Obama won the Democratic nomination.

Chappaquiddick

Ted Kennedy's political career was irrevocably changed by the Chappaquiddick incident in the summer of 1969, when he lost control of his car and drove it off a bridge into a tidal pond on Chappaquiddick Island in Massachusetts. His passenger, 28-year-old campaign worker Mary Jo Kopechne, was trapped inside the vehicle and drowned. Kennedy did not report the accident until the next morning, by which time authorities had already discovered the car and Kopechne's body. A week later, he pled guilty to leaving the scene of an accident, and was issued a suspended two-month jail sentence. No indictment was handed down, and Kennedy won reelection to the Senate in 1970. However, his prospects as a future presidential candidate were eroded.

Personal Life and Death

Ted Kennedy married his first wife, model Joan Bennett, in 1958. They had three children named Kara, Edward Jr., and Patrick. The marriage was very troubled, mostly due to Kennedy's infidelity and Bennett's alcoholism. In 1977, the couple separated, and in 1982 amicably divorced. Impeachment, Conviction, and Imprisonment

In December of 2008, Blagojevich was arrested by federal agents at his home; he was charged with corruption for threatening to halt the state's dealings with Bank of America over a shuttered factory in Chicago. Moreover, he was accused of conspiring to commit a number of pay-to-play schemes, including using bribery to assume the US Senate seat vacated by newly elected President Barack Obama. One of the most damning pieces of evidence was an FBI recording of Blagojevich saying:

"I've got this thing, and it's fucking golden. I'm just not giving it up for fucking nothing."

In January of 2009, he was impeached by the Illinois House with a vote of 114-1. Blagojevich was subsequently removed from office and barred from ever again holding public office in Illinois.

Blagojevich was indicted in April of 2009 by a federal grand jury. Later, in August of 2010, he was convicted of lying to the FBI, with his 23 other federal charges resulting in hung verdicts. During the retrial in 2011, Blagojevich was found guilty of 17 additional charges, including conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud. He was sentenced to federal prison in March of 2012. As an inmate, Blagojevich served as the lead singer of a prison band called the Jailhouse Rockers. Ultimately, he served eight years in prison until his sentence was commuted by Donald rump in 2020.

Media Endeavors

Following his removal from office in 2009, Blagojevich starred in the musical "Rod Blagojevich Superstar," a production by the Chicago improv group the Second City. He also began hosting a weekly radio talk show on the local 890 WLS. Later in the year, he released his autobiography "The Governor: The Truth Behind the Political Scandal That Continues to Rock the Nation." Controversy with Phillip Puckett

In late 2014, Warner was implicated in a federal investigation of the recent resignation of Virginia State Senator Phillip Puckett. Allegedly, Warner floated a number of federal job opportunities for the senator's daughter with the aim of preventing Puckett from leaving the evenly divided State Senate. Warner asserted that he made no explicit job offer and was merely brainstorming ideas with the senator. In early 2015, the Republican Party of Virginia filed a formal complaint arguing that Warner's conversation with Puckett was in violation of the Honest Leadership and Open Government Act.
